PSIA Program Chair Publishes in Eastern Europe, Russia and Central Asia 2022

YEREVAN, Armenia — Dr. Vahram Ter-Matevosyan, associate professor and chair of the American University of Armenia (AUA) Political Science and International Affairs (PSIA) program, has recently published two chapters in the 22nd edition of the book Eastern Europe, Russia and Central Asia 2022, released by Routledge, a leading academic publisher in the humanities and social sciences.

The first contributed chapter titled “History of Armenia: Country Survey” examines the turning points in Armenian history from the early 1950s up to 2021. The study expands on various pivotal moments for Soviet Armenia and its post-Soviet transformation, including the unfolding of the Karabakh conflict. The study also explores the political and structural causes and security implications of the 2020 war. 

The second piece titled “Russian and Turkish involvement in the South Caucasus since 1991” delves into the different phases of Russian and Turkish relations since 1991. The study characterizes these bilateral relations as complex, constantly searching for a paradigm of coexistence, cooperation, competition, and dominance in three regions of the former USSR: the South Caucasus, Central Asia, the Black Sea region, and more broadly across the Middle East and North Africa. The article is divided into three sections, each covering an area where Russia and Turkey have had to navigate the complexities of geopolitics, conflicts and geoeconomics.
